I Don't Belong Anywhere

I Don't Belong Anywhere

Bas van den Hout

14 February - 21 March 2026

“I don’t belong anywhere” appears not as a statement, but as a trace—an imprint rather than a position. The sentence suggests a condition of being in between, present yet unanchored.

In this exhibition, Bas van den Hout explores how personal memories resonate within a collective unconscious. His work departs from everyday objects and familiar forms that, once removed from their original function, begin to operate as metaphors rather than utilities. These objects carry a quiet charge: they invite projection, recognition, and doubt.

By forming intimate relationships with materials and examining their allure, Van den Hout searches for the threshold where language falters and meaning becomes unstable. What emerges is not a clear narrative, but a space of uncertainty—similar to a faded memory or a sensation that cannot be fully named.

The works do not point back to a single origin. Instead, they offer moments of recognition and estrangement, where belonging remains unresolved.
